Top Five Reasons to Select the Program

  •  You can travel everywhere! Everything is relatively close in Europe. Italy's location is particularly advantageous and I was able to travel to 8 countries and countless cities. The ease of travel is very unique.
  • The best academic experience! When you study abroad in Rome, you study in the city. This means weekly excursions from locals and getting new perspectives and experiences you would never otherwise know about.
  • Great location! CUA's campus is located in Trastevere. The campus was located a 20-minute walk from the Colosseum. The ability to get to know the city intimately is unique to this campus.
  • Connection to CUA! Because CUA runs the campus it is organized efficiently and eliminates many of the stressors other students face when studying abroad.
  • Churches! Even as a non-Christian I was able to appreciate the hundreds of beautiful, ancient churches.

What I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Went

  • Budget! When saving money and planning your budget, take into account unexpected expenses. The random bus pass and cab add up and before you know it you've spent $1000 dollars on important but unexpected things.
  • Bring some of your favorite things! About halfway through the semester I became a bit homesick and wanted something to remind me of home. I specifically wanted peanut butter and had to order it from the US. Prepare to be homesick and bring some things that remind you of home, because you might not find it in Italy.

Academics

Academics were not vigorous. This is because the European education system emphasizes fewer assignments that are worth more points. I was able to plan my traveling around big assignments, but there was little busywork or homework.

Host Country's Culture

Italy is beautiful! There is a huge diversity in both geography and culture between the regions of Italy and generally, Italians are fiercely proud of their regional identity. They are loud, opinionated, and fun people. I loved the relaxed culture as well as their love for cappuccinos and pasta.

Advice for Future Students

Be spontaneous! No matter how well prepared you are when you travel, things happen and plans change. I had the best trip to Europe when my friend's families decided to visit during spring break and I backpacked alone through the UK. Be prepared, but open to change.
