Every incoming international exchange student is required to have health insurance during their studies in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of State (DOS), this insurance must meet the following requirements:
Coverage
• Medical benefits of at least $500,000 per accident or illness
• Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
• Medical evacuation to your home country in the amount of $50,000
• A deductible not to exceed $6,500 per accident or illness.
Rating
The insurance policy must be underwritten by a corporation meeting at least one of the following standards:
• A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above
• Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-" or above
• Standard & Poor's Claims-Paying Ability of "A-" or above
• Weiss Research, Inc. rating of "B+" or above
The insurance policy must also be:
- Backed by the full faith and credit of of the student's home country;
- or part of a health benefits program offered on a group basis to employees or enrolled students by a designated sponsor;
- or offered through or underwritten by a federally qualified Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or eligible Competitive Medical PLan (CMP) as determined by the Health Care financing Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

If you are unable to submit proof of insurance at this time, it must be presented upon arrival to Catholic University. It should be in the form of a letter from the insurance company, written on official letterhead, stating the details of the adequate coverage. Failure to maintain this insurance will result in the termination of the student's exchange program.
